SU!: Lost upline

Betsy Graves

What do you do if your upline becomes less active? I would like to have an active upline that motivates me and helps me with my downline and business. I do have to say Thank You to everyone here who shares info because it motivates me. Just wondering what other have done.

 Thanks, Betsy Graves

Re: SU!: Lost upline

I've been a demo for almost 14 years (anniversary is on 11/23) and I haven't had a direct upline for most if that time. I learned to fend for myself very quickly. I do have ti say I have an awesome up-upline, I go to her meetings monthly.
Find out and connect with the person who is next in line above your upline. Or connect with other demos in your area.
You can be very successful alone, just decide you can do it!

Well…  One of the reasons we started SUDSOL was because most of us didn't have active uplines.   At one of my early conventions, I asked one of the top selling demos (one with a TON of downline), "What can I do if my upline isn't doesn't do all this stuff you're talking about?"   The answer wasn't one that I wanted to hear, but it was absolutely true.   She responded, "It starts with YOU."

I think this statement has multiple meanings:

1)      No one can motivate you, only you can motivate you.  God knows I've tried to do this 100 times with my kids.  If they don't have the motivation to do something, it won't be done.  Yes, I can put a reward out there for them - but you can do that to yourself as well.  When I reach this goal, I'm going to give myself XYZ.

2)      You can be the upline that you wish you had.   Work with your downline the way you wish your upline would work with you.

I've been a demo for 18+ years and I can tell you as an upline, what I do has changed over the years as well.  When I first became an upline I didn't have a clue what I was doing and my downline and I figured it out together.  As I matured in my SU! business and as an upline I had more things I did for my downline - but you know what, with some of them it just didn't matter what I did.  They had to want it as well.  There was a time that SU! was my bread and butter and we needed the SU! income to live on.  I ran my business (and worked with my downline) different than I do now.  My priorities have changed (I now have a family and thus the amount of time I had to devote to my SU! business changed) and as a result what I do for my downline has changed.  Also the composition of my downline has also changed - most of them are hobby demos and not really interested in promoting.  So I've had to gear what I do for where THEY are in their SU! business as well.  If I was to put out incentives for promotions, it wouldn't motivate most of them.

So it's not quite as easy as it sounds.  You have to take into consideration not only what you want for your SU! business, but also where your upline/downline is in their business.

So this is my suggestion to you.  As a start, talk to your upline.  She may not even know that you're wanting more contact/encouragement from her.  No one can read minds.  She may think you're ok on your own and don’t want to be bothered (because there are plenty of downline who are like that).  Tell her what you'd like her to do for you and then ask her if that's something she can do.  If it is, great, then you two have worked out a game plan together.  If it's not, then respect that and look to someone else that you can team with to give you that motivation (keep your ears out for new programs coming from SUDSOL at the beginning of the year that may help you there!)  It doesn't have to be an upline, it can be a sideline or even a downline who is in a similar phase of their business.  You can motivate each other and hold each other accountable for the things you want to do.

The thing you absolutely cannot do is sit there and wish for something to happen without your involvement and action.  This is a business and no one is going to run it for you - even your upline.  So sometimes you just have to take the bull by the horns and jump in.

Hope this has helped.

Coleen

I got adopted by a manager in a town an hour away and I do make some of her Downline meetings and get her emails so that is a great improvement.  I don’t get to those meetings often but I can also send trade cards and receive trade cards for new ideas.  This has helped but for a daily dose of updates, etc. Sudsol has been a wealth of information on a daily basis!
