SUDSOL Passwords - an analogy

There has been some confusion regarding the passwords on SUDSOL and so we thought this analogy would be useful for members to help clear up any confusion.

Think of the overall SUDSOL website as a house.  You need a key to get inside the front door of the house.  This key is your overall SUDSOL login/password.  The username is your last name followed by your first initial all in lower case.  So Jane Stamper would be stamperj.  Passwords were initially assigned to you in the format of 3 letters & 4 numbers (abc1234).  You can change this overall password here: http://www.sudsol.org/cgi-bin/admin.cgi?action=F&targetdir=members

The overall SUDSOL login/password will be a pop-up that looks similar to this:

(Notice that it says www.sudsol.org and SUDSOL Members Area)

Once you login you are now inside the "SUDSOL House".  Within the house are rooms.  Some rooms you can get into without any additional keys (articles, chat rooms, etc)  But two rooms have their own key - The Discussion Forum & The Samples Gallery.  You can look around those "rooms" without any key (think of the room as having a glass front wall - you can look all you want, but you can't add anything to the room without a key to get into the room).   The keys for these rooms are different/separate from the overall house key.  While you can "re-key" those rooms to the same as your front door key, they're not connected.  So, if you change your front door lock the room locks don't change - they remain the same as they were before you changed the front door key.  If you want all 3 passwords to be the same, then you have to "re-key" all 3 locks.   For these two rooms, you can "unlock the door" and leave it unlocked forever.  This is done by the program saving cookies on your computer.  As long as your cookies don't get deleted (and you don't specifically log out), you will remain logged in indefinitely.  Some virus programs automatically delete cookies, if your room cookie is deleted, then you'll have to unlock the room again by logging in.

The Discussion Forum uses your email address as your username and you picked the password (or key) when you registered for the Discussion Forum (if we registered for you, we provided you the password/key in the confirmation email).  If you haven't registered yet, then you don't have a key yet.  You don't need a key if you just want to look around.  You only need to register/login if you want to post via the website.  You can reset your Discussion Forum password by going to the Discussion Forum (first get in the house here: www.sudsol.org/members with the front door key, then click on the "Discussion Forum" link at the top of the page)  Look in the upper right corner - if your name is there, the room is already unlocked and you can go right in.  If you name isn't there, click on the login link.  There is a "Forgot Your Password" link you can use to reset your password.  If you're already logged in, you can change your password by clicking on your name and selecting "Account Settings" and then "Edit personal information"

The Samples Gallery uses a custom username and password that you created when you registered for the gallery.  If you haven't registered for the gallery, then you don't have a login/password.  You don't need to register unless you want your own personal Gallery.  Without registering and logging in, anything you post will be put under the general "Unregistered User" account.  If you want people to be able to see all the samples you've loaded to the gallery together, you can create your own login/password by clicking the "Register" link and following the directions.  Again, you can reset your Samples Gallery login by going to the Samples Gallery (first get in the house here: www.sudsol.org/members with the front door key, then click on the "Samples Gallery" link at the top of the page)  Look in the upper right corner if it says "Logout" then you're already logged in.  If it says "Login", click on the login link.    There is a "Forgot Your Password" link you can use to reset your password.  If you're already logged in, you can change your password by clicking on "Profile" on the left side of that same bar and selecting "Edit Profile" and then "Change Password"

If you click on any links that take you directly to a room within the house, you may first have to login to the SUDSOL website (front door key) before you get to the room that the link was taking you to.

We hope this analogy helps to better understand the access to the SUDSOL website and the different passwords.

Someone pointed out my error.  The front door logon for Sally Stamper would
be "stampers", not "stampersj".  I intended to change the name to Jane
Stamper so would be stamperj (and didn't just look like a plural of
stamper).  I've corrected the original post.
