Resources for hosting Online Classes

donnab07
I am seriously considering changing my in-person classes to online classes.  I want to do it right, but have not been able to find resources on how to do this.  I would love to receive some input on this subject.

RE: SU!: Resources for hosting Online Classes

Cathy Hansen

Curiosity compels me to ask . . . why do you want to do online classes rather than in-person?  Is it to get more exposure and hopefully more business?

The only reason I’m asking is because I have SO MUCH FUN doing in-person classes and stamp camps.  I suppose for me it’s as much the social aspect of it as anything and it would be hard for me to give that up.

RE: SU!: Resources for hosting Online Classes

donnab07

Cathy, I love hosting my classes – the personal touch, fellowship and sharing, but attendance has dropped from what used to be 10 attendees to 2 or 3.  That is a lot of work for so few people.  My initial goal is to advertise an in-person class in my studio, with an option to buy the class online.  If the online classes are a success, I would eventually offer just that option.  I don’t know if that will work.  That is why I am looking for advice, lessons learned and guidance on how to proceed.

I still host a monthly stamp club, which is going great, so I wouldn’t give that up.

RE: SU!: Resources for hosting Online Classes

Cathy Hansen

I suspected it was something like that, Donna.  My attendance has dropped off too, so I was toying with the idea of doing bi-monthly classes in my craft room instead of monthly.  But then I had 6 people here yesterday and all of them talked about how much they enjoyed it and that they planned to return next month!  So . . . .

I also do monthly stamp camps (two different camps each month; a third sporadically), plus classes in a local crafters’ thrift shop and one at a local senior center.  These activities are all strictly card-making; no selling opportunities.  Class attendance ebbs and flows, but it seems like right around 6 is my magic number these days – and I’m happy with that.  It puts a few bucks in my pocket and is small enough that everyone still receives special attention.  And low stress levels for me!!!  :D

Donna,

Do you have a mailing list or Facebook page/group?  If so how many people are on your list or in your group?  You need to build awareness with those people that you are looking to expand by offering online classes. I would survey start with a survey to find out what they would love to see. John recommends to add 1-2 people on your list daily.
