Question for a non SU product

wenkerc
Hi Stampers,  I saw an item demonstrated online called the Misti.  You place your stamps on the lid the way you would like them stamped on the cs and everytime you stamp multiple cards they will be stamped in the proper location.  Do you think SU would ever consider adding this item to their product line?  I purchased one and it works great.  Does anyone else use one or do you have any additional comments about this item?  Thanks!

Re: SU!: Question for a non SU product

I do have a Misti and love it.  I don't advertise that I have it and I still use my Stampin Up blocks at my workshops. The Misti makes it really easy to align the stamps perfectly.

Happy Stamping

Re: SU!: Question for a non SU product

I have strong doubts about the MISTI ever being offered by SU due to the copyright issues involved.  There is a video however about using your Stampin' Scrub as a replacement that I think is really good:

I have been toying with the idea of mounting some kind of metal in the case which would allow the use of magnets and using a piece of graph paper to give me a grid, but I haven't done anything yet.

I have a MISTI and I love it. I also have the Creative Corners set that goes with it. I do not advertise it and I waited through two catalogs to see if SU would have something like it. It is so worth the money. I like to make card sets for gifts and this tool makes it possible for each card to be consistently the same. You can also make a creative background by placing multiple images on the grid side and stamp it all at once. Great fun!

Christine,
I made something similar using a stamp case and a piece of fun foam. I didn't have magnets at the time so I used post-it tape. It worked but is quite small.

RE: Question for a non SU product

Phyllis Strickland
In reply to this post by wenkerc

I have had one since they were first made and I LOVE it.  I would not want to do big swaps without it anymore!  I rarely do only 1 card, so it saves a ton of cardstock since very image is perfect and saves time lining things up, so it is on my table all the time and I often wish I had a second one.

It is a small company so I don’t see much chance that SU would partner with MISTI, but now other companies are coming out with a similar product.  The We R Memory Keepers version seems to get mixed reviews, but the Tim Holtz stamping platform which is now not available until June gets good reviews.

She finally got the patent through about a month ago, so I know shipping has been halted on some of these while patent issues are sorted out.  I personally think it is a crime when big companies rip off the idea of a small entrepreneur and change it just a bit so I wouldn’t even consider buying their versions.

IF SU offers one, I expect it will have to be their own version because WRMK and Tim Holtz are not likely to partner with SU.

RE: SU!: Question for a non SU product

Phyllis Strickland
In reply to this post by Barbara Felece

Like I said, I do have one and my customers know it.  SU doesn’t sell it and I doubt they will have something similar anytime soon due to patent issues I mentioned earlier.  I don’t use it directly in a class but I have no problem talking about it or showing it to people on the side since SU has nothing to compete with it and truthfully I think doing that helps not hurts.  If I can show customer something that will make it easier for them to decide to make their own holiday cards believe me I will do that.  A number of them have bought the MISTI and tell others how grateful they are that I told them about it.  They are now much more  loyal to me and some even spend more $$ than before because the MISTI makes stamping multiples so much easier.  They definitely buy stamps sets that they wouldn’t have bought without the MISTI to help with perfect placement.    Just my 2 cents.

If you want to make your own, for your personal use, I used a needlework magnetic board ruler that I cut down to fit a SU Clear Mount Case (use tin snips).  You can use a coupon at any of the big box stores to buy one. Then used earth magnets to hold my cardstock in place.  It works well when we are camping and space is limited.

Re: SU!: Question for a non SU product

Kathy Slamar
In reply to this post by Delphine Anderson

I would suggest if we want the Misti carried by SU that we flood the Sandbox (on the SU website).  I asked them for it over a year ago.  It is a great tool.  I use it often, but not
with my customers.

Any time you want SU to offer a product, let them know via the Sandbox.  Personally, I wish they would carry more tools and less flower stamps!  My long-time customers would be
more willing to buy useful tools more than another flower set!!!

RE: SU!: Question for a non SU product

wenkerc

I will put my thoughts into the Sandbox.  I totally agree with you.  I have some longtime customers (over 15 years) and flower stamp sets have been way over done for years.

I do have a Misti and love it.  I don't advertise that I have it and I still use my Stampin Up blocks at my workshops. The Misti makes it really easy to align the stamps perfectly.

Thanks!

I only buy Stampin’ Up! I do not advertise for other stores or sell other items but what we sell. As for the Misti, who knows… but if SU! Was working on something, I bet it would be better that what is out! They aren’t always the first out of the gate, but they do try their hardest to make up with it when they do offer new products and tools!

Re: SU!: Question for a non SU product

Judi Carpenter

Lois, I so totally agree with you.  I'm sending this to the entire SUDSOL group on purpose!  When we show and/or use non-Stampin' UP! product in our classes or parties, we are encouraging our customers to go to the local craft store!  While they're there, do we not realize that they will shop?  It's our nature, folks.  Why would I want to encourage my customers to go to other stores when they can get everything they need from ME?  Sure, there are other watercolor papers out there, and some are probably really good.  But when we use them in our classes, that is a violation of our contract (yes, it is, to answer someone who tried to convince me that SU! had changed their policy a while back) in addition to being just not smart.

OK, enough lecturing.  I have a downline meeting coming in a few minutes and I can hardly wait to see what one of my demonstrators brought home from OnStage Local.  I wasn't able to go; son and his fiancee scheduled their wedding for  April 8th.  WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?   LOL

Re: SU!: Question for a non SU product

Barbara Felece

You know it's nice to think our customers only buy from us but it's not realistic. People go to the big box stores and it's naive to think they don't. People are also more inclined to go online to Pinterest and other sites.I don't think it's wrong to mention a tool or other product that SU doesn't have that will help a customer that may be struggling or lacks confidence in stamping. My customers know I have a MISTI even though I don't use it in classes.I think when you tell them about "other" things they appreciate that and will trust your guidance on other product from SU that they might not try.
Just my opinion.

RE: SU!: Question for a non SU product

Lois Folla

Barb,

I am not naïve and neither are other demonstrators that only show and sell what we offer. I did read you don’t show it, and I’m glad for your own business you don’t.

It is  in our contract not to bring other product tools to workshops and our classes.  But that is besides the point, it’s a no brainer not do do that.

Of course I know my customers go to box stores….  But I give them great service so they purchase things we don’t have, but it’s not from me showing them.

Thanks for sharing your feelings, but know when we make choices it’s not because we are naïve or think we are the only ones in the world : )

Have a great evening Barb!

Hugs,

Lois

You know it's nice to think our customers only buy from us but it's not realistic. People go to the big box stores and it's naive to think they don't. People are also more inclined to go online to Pinterest and other sites.I don't think it's wrong to mention a tool or other product that SU doesn't have that will help a customer that may be struggling or lacks confidence in stamping. My customers know I have a MISTI even though I don't use it in classes.I think when you tell them about "other" things they appreciate that and will trust your guidance on other product from SU that they might not try.

Just my opinion.

LOL

Barbara Felece

Hi Lois,

It seems that you were offended by my opinion. My point was that there is nothing we can do to prevent a customer from purchasing say an envelope Punch board using a coupon. I've had customers do that and bring it to class. I showed them my SU Punch board and they still bought the other one because they could get it cheaper.

A certain amount of that is unavoidable.

Hugs,

Lois

RE: SU!: Question for a non SU product

wenkerc

I never intended to show the Misti at any SU workshops or even with my club.  I only intend to use it for my own personal use.  I don’t even intend to tell any of my stamping friends about this item because I don’t want to hurt my business.  I have customers that sometimes buy things on HSN or somewhere else and I don’t say anything except when they complain that it doesn’t work properly I might tell them that SU stands behind their products and that I could have gotten a replacement for them if they had they purchased from me.

They aren’t always the first out of the gate, but they do try their hardest to make up with it when they do offer new products and tools!

Have a nice day,

Hi Stampers, I saw an item demonstrated online called the Misti. You place your stamps on the lid the way you would like them stamped on the cs and everytime you stamp multiple cards they will be stamped in the proper location. Do you think SU would ever consider adding this item to their product line? I purchased one and it works great. Does anyone else use one or do you have any additional comments about this item? Thanks!

Re: SU!: Question for a non SU product

Diana Enns

I'm a newbie here, still on a trial membership - but I tend to agree with Barb.  Having been a paper crafter for years, I've discovered that many "companies" purchase things like the envelope puncn boards, die cutters, the "misti" type tools from a basic mgf and just put their name on it.  Even papers and inks.  I've managed to acquire 4 of the We R Memory punch boards, a sizzix big kick,  in the 15 yrs I've done paper crafting....actually won my Misti, and a cuttlebug......Being new to SU as a demonstrator, I don't have the funds to purchase everything at once....I'll start with inks, papers, stamps, etc and then move up to other things......If I happen to use one of my tools to show someone how to use it, I can't "force" them to purchase through SU - I'd like for them to, but if they go to a big box store to save money, I look at that as "if they save money on tools, they'll have more to spend on product.

Thanks for letting me share my view.

Phyllis Strickland

I agree 100% with Diana Enns.

Someone said  “It is in our contract not to bring other product tools to workshops and our classes “    This section on page 9 of the demonstrator handbook that is currently on the website does not support that statement:  “The primary focus of your demonstrations should always be Stampin’ Up! products…     If you find that you must use some generic or off brand tools, consider ways to appropriately build the Stampin’ Up! brand and keep the focus of your demonstration on promoting Stampin’ Up! product.”   If this is incorrect, please point me to the current in force document that says we cannot use other products.

There is an Artisan winner who shows her stamping hauls from other companies on her blog.  I think she’d be canceled by now if that isn’t ok.  Not smart for her business maybe, but not against SU policy.

This attitude that customers should buy only Stampin’ Up! does not reflect caring behavior and is unrealistic.  It is also a slam to new demonstrators who can’t get everything at once, it takes years to replace existing tools if you have been stamping for years.  I have been at this 13 years and still have not replaced every tool just to get the SU logo on it.  I (and  fellow local demo friends) have found  that trying to fight the tool battle with big box stores is a losing battle – all our customers have all 3 big stores (A C Moore, Michaels, JoAnn)  within a few miles and some also have Hobby lobby.  I don’t waste my energy on that – I focus on the stamps and dies, especially bundles, because the stores can’t compete with that.  And customers will buy them because the tools aren’t much good without stamps, paper and ink.

Just an FYI two of my customer groups came to me from other SU demos because they did not like the demos attitude that they should buy only SU.  It still comes in conversation now and then about how they enjoy my classes/workshops so much more because I’m not an SU “Nazi,” a name coined by one of them somewhere along the line.

Hi Lois,It seems that you were offended by my opinion. My point was that there is nothing we can do to prevent a customer from purchasing say an envelope Punch board using a coupon. I've had customers do that and bring it to class. I showed them my SU Punch board and they still bought the other one because they could get it cheaper.   A certain amount of that is unavoidable.

I have to chime in here in support of Phyllis.  I do use a MISTI in my classes and workshops simply because there is no viable SU alternative to this product and many, if not most, of my customers/students are seniors with varying degrees of disabiility.  My main concern for these ladies is that the leave my classes/workshops feeling proud of what they have created and feeling good about how they created it.  So many times shaky hands create projects that they are unhappy with or frustrated by.  I use only SU inks, paper, and stamps and encourage them to get the quality product from me that I can personally guarantee.  I DO NOT WANT them walking away from my classes/workshops unhappy and frustrated by physical disabilities they cannot control.  The MISTI is one of those products that can completely eliminate this disappointment and frustration and if SU cannot find a way to offer this product to my customers, then I will let them use mine!

If SU does not carry a comparable product then my read of the demonstrator agreement is that I can use it as long as the majority of product used in my classes/workshops is from Stampin' Up!  In my classes and workshops the only alternative product that I use is the MISTI and I firmly believe that the happiness of my customers is my main concern.  Maybe I am alone in this and I should be more concerned with promoting my SU business, but I want my ladies to feel happy and proud of what they created and not feel frustrated and feel like tossing their creations in the trash when they get home.
