Re: SU!: Printers

Blythe Klipple

I purchased an Epson about 3-4 months ago and love it.  I’ve needed to call for tech assistance twice and the people were perfect and got me where I needed to be right away.  I’ve have too many HP printers (slow learner) and have moaned about each one of them.  I will NEVER buy another HP.  They just don’t last.  I also had a recent Canon, hoping for a good photo printer.  It was.  But with built in obsolescence it died before the 3rd year, just after I’d loaded it with new ink cartridges.  When I asked the tech about that on the phone he said yes, they have about a 3 yr life span.  Not right.  So, my recommendation is an Epson.

Re: SU!: Printers

Robin Messenheimer

Let me begin by saying that Blythe is one of my most favorite people here!

BUT I have been an HP user for forever, and have NO complaints about them. My current printer has been with us for 5 years and has gone through 2 moves and 5  computers. The HP before that I had to get rid of only because there were some features on the newer versions that I really wanted (air print; automatic double-sided, for example). I had one Epson, and it lasted for less than a year with what I put it through.

All that said, every one of my friends who has a Mac computer likes her Epsons. I have a PC and I love my HPs. But my iPhones and iPads print beautifully on my HP.

I think the biggest key to having a successful printer is that you read all the books they send you and keep up to speed with User boards. Printers need user care and love to keep going.

I agree, Robin.  I've had HP printers with no problems as well.  I use a PC; but my iPhone and iPad print just as well.

I think most people have had a bad experience with one or two companies. We’ve had all three brands at one point or another and not had problems with them. However, in recent years we have gone with HP.

Happy Stamping!

I finally bought a color laser printer because the ink lasts and doesn’t run. It’s also good for picture transfers.

We use all 3 brands too. I've always had problems with HP even purchased higher quality one and still had problems. I personally think their programed software doesn't play nice with other software. lol  I do a lot of scrapbooking  and printing pictures. In my opinion Epson prints better quality pictures I think, the picture paper is just a better quality in general too. My canon printer does a good job and prints decent pictures but every now and then it acts up. lol

I also have a brother laser printer that just prints black and white and it does an awesome job! I just wish it was a colored one. lol

I would really research any printer you might buy. Also read the reviews on it. I purchased an HP one that was supposed to be great and it didn't last 6 months when I read the reviews they were mostly negative.

I hope that helps.

Re: SU!: Printers

Robin Messenheimer

I just printed an 8-page project on my OfficeJet Pro 8600, using Whisper White Cardstock (not the Thick). It went through perfectly. I’ve had this printer for several years, and it’s always liked WW and VV regular weight. It balks at the thicker cardstock, though, so I just do one page at a time.

Not right.  So, my recommendation is an Epson.

much cheaper to by cartridges too than for the Canon.

Re: Printers

SUDSOL Leadership Board

In reply to this post by Cindy Wilson
Every major printer manufacturer is going to have merit.  And every printer manufacturer is going to have low end, mid and high end printers.   So talking about specific manufacturers is not going to have as much merit as talking about specific printers with specific features.

The process that I go through when I'm looking for a new printer (or just about any new piece of electronics) is to think about how *I* plan to use this item.  What is it that I want it to do.   So for example, for a printer...

Do I want black and white (laser) or color (most likely ink cartridges)?
Do I want to be able to print a specific size (letter, legal, 12x12)?
Do I want one that I can print to via wi-fi (ie. not connected to a computer?)
Do I want to be able to print double sided or only single sided?
Do I want to be able to print on cardstock?
Do I want to be able to scan and/or copy as well as print?
Is this going to be my daily printer for all my printing needs or for just special printing needs?

Identifying what *your* needs are will then help you narrow down to one or two printers from each of the main manufactures.

Then  you can look at online reviews for those specific printers to see how happy people are with theirs.  You can compare prices between the various models.  You can look at what the costs of the ink or toner cartridges are (many times this cost is the KEY thing to look at as the printers cost a fraction of what the cost of the lifetime of ink costs).

Just buying a printer that someone else likes isn't a wise idea unless you use your printer in the same fashion for the same things that the other person does.

Hope that helps.
Coleen

Coleen

Don't forget to check Consumer Reports AND on-line reviews by customers.
