Oh my word! A serious OOPS in grammar on a new stamp

Blythe Klipple

This is  beautiful card and a lovely thought but——the grammar is a SCREAMING NO NO!  Using correct grammar, the wording should be
“to a friend WHO makes me smile”.

“To a friend THAT makes me smile” refers to an animal, an inanimate thing.
“To a friend WHO makes me smile” refers to that lovely human friend.

I had some pretty tough English teachers from junior high through college and sadly, I’ve heard this disintegration of our American grammar over the years.  Let's not show the world that Stampin’ Up! has also fallen off the tracks and succumbed to this lousy grammar.  I even hear it on newscasts and among other who should know better.  Stickler that I am, I stop the person (not on tv!) and remind them of the proper grammar.  To me it’s like saying “I ain’t going to do the dishes ………  rather than “I’m not going to do the dishes.”

Please see if we can get this stamp corrected and up to the normal standards and quality of Stampin’ Up! products.  Unfortunately this is one new stamp set I won’t be able to purchase as it currently reads.  Unfortunately I didn’t grab the name of the stamp set or the page it appears on.  (or…..more correctly the page on which it appears!!!)

Thanks for listening and please pass this email on to the powers that be.

Blythe:

I am so with you on this issue!  I majored in English in college,  and like you, I had tough teachers from junior high through college.  I have a hard time listening to or reading bad grammar without cringing. I also stop and take the time to correct people, but most of the time they think I'm an idiot for correcting them.

RE: SU!: Oh my word! A serious OOPS in grammar on a new stamp

Cathy Hansen
In reply to this post by Jeanne Moss

Yes, I too am a grammar snob.  My husband caught me correcting (in red ink) a notice being circulated to the members of a bowling league in which we participated “back in the day” and said, “Geez, Cath, can’t you just give it a rest once and a while!?”  🤣🤣🤣

Since then I have relaxed my stance considerably on correcting adults, but I still correct my 9-year-old grandson on occasion.  (He actually has a pretty good grasp of the English language.)  I figure if you haven’t figured it out by the time you finish 6th Grade, you never will.

Thanks for pointing this out, Blythe.  The Sandbox will receive a comment from me this afternoon.

So I personally struggle with grammar, I would be one of those people you all feel the need to correct!! ;) LOL My English teacher would say that the saying is focusing on the action of what is being done not the person who is doing it (if that was the case then who would have been the correct word).

But the focus IS on the person WHO is making me smile.  I sincerely doubt that your English teacher would have said that.  And yes, I'm one of those grammar cops (English major teacher).  But whatever the interpretation, the sentiment is incorrect and in need of correction.

Re: SU!: Oh my word! A serious OOPS in grammar on a new stamp

Judi Carpenter

Nononono!   I wasn't offended.  And I wasn't intending to make you feel small or dumb.  My sincere apologies if that's what I did.  As an English teacher, I can tell you that the construction is that the pronoun (that or who) refers back to the person.  That's why it needs to be "who" instead of "that."   In my post, I was trying to clarify the reason for the correction.  I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings.  I certainly didn't mean to.

And who am I addressing?  Somehow, the SUDSOL posts don't include a name any more unless we "sign" them.

But the focus IS on the person WHO is making me smile.  I sincerely doubt that your English teacher would have said that.  And yes, I'm one of those grammar cops (English major teacher).  But whatever the interpretation, the sentiment is incorrect and in need of correction.

The image is from the Forever Fern stamp set on page 110, in case you want to report it.

I never correct people, but the voices in my head snigger.  LOL

Blythe,

I agree. Any thoughts about how we encourage SU to correct this?
