Since we went to this new Discussion Forum system over a year ago, we have had no spam sent to the list. Yee Haw! Since we no longer use an "open" system like Yahoo, everything resides behind our SUDSOL password protected area, your email address is more secure than ever before.
However, it's always a good idea to remember that spam and spammers still exist. These messages typically grab email addresses from either your address book, your friends on facebook, or open groups you belong to and spoof the from name so it looks like it's coming from someone you know - in hopes that you'll open it since you see your friend's name. Those emails typically have a generic message like "Hi, have you seen this. Check it out" with a link. When you click on the link, it makes you vulnerable for them to get YOUR address book and target your friends. Then they likely sell the "valid" addresses (those who have clicked) to spammers - which generates even more spam for you.
Most SPAM filters catch these emails right away and mark them or put them in your SPAM folder so you never see them. But if yours doesn't, you can easily tell they're SPAM by looking at the email address - it's likely NOT your friends email address.
So just a friendly reminder to keep your eye out for SPAM and don't click on a link in an email because you think the email came from a friend or family member.
