Electronic Cutters

Joanne Mulligan
Hi Everyone!

I have been looking at electronic cutters for a while now but I still can't decide on one in particular.  My husband has asked me what I want for Christmas and this would be perfect, only thing is I'm not sure what one I want.  My question is what ones do you feel work best and are user friendly?  Thanks!

Re: SU!: Electronic Cutters

Maria Pobre

If I didn't already have a Silhouette then I would buy the Brother Scan N Cut.

I don’t have one of these, but I do know that Silhouette American is running a good sale on the Portrait right  now because they released a new and better version of the Cameo.

I have the silhouette cameo and adore it. I'm having all sorts of trouble with my hands right now, and cutting things out with the cameo is a godsend. I just got the pix scan mat but haven't had time to use it. I like that I get free shapes every week too. I got a great deal when I bought the machine and have a bunch of accessories that came with it that I really like. HTH

I also have the pix scan Matt. Took a little bit of effort, but it is awesome!  I love that I can stamp images on my whisper white, take a pic, transfer to computer, import & cut. Woo hoo!!!!
I have just barely used this feature bathos full time job & other obligations keep interfering with my crafty time.

FYI - I have a friend with a wholesale account for the Silhouettes and supplies.  I have offered purchases before - and I can certainly do it again if there is enough interest.

If you are interested in Silhouette Cutters or supplies - let me know (PRIVATELY - via patti@sudsol.com) and I will see what kind of pricing I can get!

I have the Cricut Explore and love, love, love it!  The explore now has a print and cut feature where you can print out any image and the cricut will cut it, and that means I can use the SU images in MDS.  The iPad app for the Cricut is coming out in January.  There are also a lot of Cricut groups on Facebook that offer loads of help and suggestions.  Finally, SU papers cut beautifully in the Cricut.

I got a great deal when I bought the machine and have a bunch of accessories that came with it that I really like. HTH

Hi Everyone!

I have been looking at electronic cutters for a while now but I still can't decide on one in particular. My husband has asked me what I want for Christmas and this would be perfect, only thing is I'm not sure what one I want. My question is what ones do you feel work best and are user friendly? Thanks!

RE: RE: Re: Re: Electronic Cutters

Phyllis Strickland

I have a Cricut Expressions and a Bug that is on indefinite loan to a friend.  I love them both EXCEPT they do only the Cricut images/cartridges.  I was excited to read about the Cricut Explore and was all ready to order it, but decided to check reviews first.  I have read very negative and very positive reviews, I don’t know what to believe. It receives overwhelmingly positive review on Amazon, but it’s the negatives that have caused me to hold off.  I have read quite a lot about a number of issues:

1.      Is it true that it requires an internet connection and can be used only ON-LINE and does not work without an internet connection?    This would be a deal breaker for those of us in rural areas who do not have access to 100% reliable internet connectivity.

2.      Designs are store in the cloud not on your computer, so again INTERNET required.  If you happen to

3.      Also have read that it is advertised to work with Mac but Mac users report a lot of trouble with the software and getting the Explore to do anything.   I’m a Mac user, so that would be another deal breaker

4.      If you have a lot of designs stored in CraftRoom you are out of luck. They will not work with the new software

5.      I  have a stash of Cartridges.  You now have to be linked to the internet to use them and they have to be registered.  You also can’t share them.

6.       What happens if Provocraft goes under?  Your machine is useless

I guess my point is do your research so you  know what you are getting into!!

And be sure to give your machine a workout before the return period ends.

I just responded to some of the questions below.  This is what I’ve learned based on researching the Cricut Explore.

Also, I used to work in the legal profession before I “retired” to become a stay at home mom and it just irked me that Provo Craft went after companies like Sure Cuts A Lot and Make The Cut - 3rd party software providers.  Again, I don’t think it is right that they also retain ownership of the designs and you only get the rights to use them and if you end your subscription the rights to the designs are lost meaning you have to start from scratch purchasing rights to images.

I opted to purchase the Silhouette Cameo (not the absolute newest) and I love it!  The Silhouette Cameo can cut MDS Images (SVG) but I haven’t done that yet.

2.      Designs are store in the cloud not on your computer, so again INTERNET required.  If you happen to…  YES… AND, YOU DO NOT OWN THE IMAGES!  You only by the rights to USE the images but they remain the property of Provo Craft and if you ever end your subscription you loose access to all the designs you purchased the rights to.

3.      Also have read that it is advertised to work with Mac but Mac users report a lot of trouble with the software and getting the Explore to do anything.   I’m a Mac user, so that would be another deal breaker - I don’t know about this one… I also have a MAC but didn’t find anything specific although I was assuming that it DID work with a Mac so wasn’t really looking for details on this question.

4.      If you have a lot of designs stored in CraftRoom you are out of luck. They will not work with the new software - Yep, I believe this is correct.

5.      I  have a stash of Cartridges.  You now have to be linked to the internet to use them and they have to be registered.  You also can’t share them.

I have a Cricut E2 and was on the phone yesterday with Provocraft. While we were waiting for the computer to update, we discussed the new Explore and Provo verified that yes,  you need internet to work the machine. I told them that was a major downfall because I take mine to crops and often there isn’t internet or it’s spotty at best. Provo acted like that wasn’t a big deal, but as you know, it is and a deal breaker for me. I didn’t think about rural internet as I don’t have that issue here but it sure is valid for you.

Since I’m PC based we didn’t discuss the Mac issue, so I have no comment in that area.

Hope this helps.

I have the new cricut Explore. This is my first cricut so dont know how the precious ones function , but I love it!!! With the new update, you can print stuff on your printer and the cricut will cut it. You can use with your wireless unit too.
So i am thinking print your MDS projects and cricut cuts it.

Re: SU!: Electronic Cutters

Alicia Chaparro
In reply to this post by Joanne Mulligan
Ok there is going to be a lot of information presented below so grab a cup
of tea or coffee before you begin!

I am a Mac only user so that eliminates a lot of options for me right off
the bat
But here are my suggestions for you when looking at machines. I get no
compensation for the products I'm listing below I'm just giving information
based on my experience with them. I'm disregarding Provocraft because as a
company I dislike many of their business practices and customer service so
I try not to purchase their products. I'm going to only compare the
machines im familiar with: Sizzix eClips, Silhouette Cameo/Portrait,
Pazzles Vue

1. Is it compatible with Apple operating systems?
Silhouette Cameo/portrait, Sizzix eClips, Pazzles Vue

2. Does it need Internet to run?
Internet is used on Silhouette Machines if you want to purchase and import
designs straight into Silhouette Studio software from the Silhouette online
store

Internet is used on Pazzles Machines to purchase and import designs
straight into inVue software  from the Pazzles Craft Room

Internet is used on Sizzix eClips Machines to purchase and import designs
from eShapes store
If you are only using your computer to cut images saved on your machine you
can design print and cut without internet access.

3. Does it only work with cartridges?
Sizzix eClips takes both cartridges and digital files (this machine is
retired)
Silhouette and Pazzles and Sizzix eClips2 are digital only

4. Does it require a power outlet?
yes
Sizzix eClips2 offers bluetooth capabilities so you can use the machine wirelessly also

5. Can you print your image and cut it out?
You have print and cut options on Pazzles Vue built into software
Silhouette Cameo/Portrait  machine to offer Print & Cut as an option
Silhouette has also released a new mat called PixScan. PixScan mats allow you to stamp on your paper then take a picture to turn your stamped images into Print & Cut Designs
Silhouette PixScan Technology Video
Also Cameo2 doesn't need a mat and has a roll feeder option for things like vinyl
Sizzix eClips needs eCal (third party software) for Print & Cut

6. How large is the cutting area?
The eclips cuts thousands of shapes ranging in sizes from approximately
.01" (.025cm) to 24" (61.0cm). The Cutting Mats allow you to cut paper
sizes up to 12" x 12" (30.5cm x 30.5cm) or 12" x 24" (30.5cm x 61.0cm)

The Inspiration Vūe™ can die cut shapes as small as 1/8” all the way up to 12” wide and 24” long. As one of the most powerful electronic die cutters available, the Inspiration Vūe™ can also cut materials up to 2mm thick (a little over 1/16”

The Silhouette Portrait model has rollers for standard Letter size (8.5 inch width) and has an actual cutting width area of approximately 8 inches

The Silhouette CAMEOhas adjustable rollers for an A4 size, a standard Letter size, or a 12 inch size, which offers up to a true 12 inch cutting width area.

7. What materials can you cut?
Sizzix eClips can cut:

   - Paper
   - Vinyl
   - Construction Paper
   - Cardstock
   - Adhesive Cardstock
   - Vellum
   - Chipboard (cereal box thickness)
   - Foil

8. Does it require 3rd party software?
Basic software comes with each machine. Designer Studio for Silhouette
allows importing of SVG files and great user option with Silhouette Studio
Software.

****Side note all 3 machines come with their own software but I recommend a
third party software called SCAL (Sure Cuts A Lot) or eCAL (eClips version)
because you have far more options with the machine. Also they work
seamlessly with MDS images. It's worth the investment.

Heres a link from SVGCuts (makers of exclusive designs for Sure Cuts a Lot Software) that has a
comparison of electronic Cutting Machines

9. Warranty coverage
Silhouette software support is available for all registered Silhouette
users and does not currently have an expiration period. The Silhouette
hardware has a one year limited warranty (*which does not extend to
consumables, such as the blade and cutting mat*). Should you experience any
issues relating to the hardware of the Silhouette machine within one year
of the original purchase, please contact us at toll free 800-859-8243 (*U.S.
& Canada*) or at support@silhouetteamerica.com.

Each Inspiration Vūe™ is warranted against defects for one year. In
addition every Inspiration® Vūe™ includes 1 year of phone technical support.

$99.00 *with 2yr craft room subscription

11. Noise Level?
These machines are loud so if you craft at night with little ones you might
need to find a place where you can muffle the sound.

12. Accuracy of Cuts?
The sizzix eClips boasts the greatest accuracy when cutting heavily
detailed images as well as very small images
Also on each machine the Print & Cut feature must be calibrated properly for accurate results. You need good lighting so that the laser will be able to read the registration marks.

Again these reviews are based on my personal experience with the machines.
ALWAYS do your own research and if you are able to, bring card stock to a
local scrapbook store and ask for a test drive. It's always better to be
informed as much as possible before investing in this kind of tool. I love
that I can use MDS easily with my ecutters to have access to more product
digitally than I would be able to invest in otherwise. I hope this helps.

RE: Re: Electronic Cutters & stamps!

Diane Harman

Alicia,

Thanks for the great review of the products. There is a something that I want to correct about the Silhouette in your review.

Silhouette has always had Print and Cut.  You don’t need the new Pixscan mat for that feature.  The print and cut prints registration marks on your paper that the optical eye of the cutter reads and knows exactly where to cut.

The new Pixscan mats are for stamping and cutting. You can STAMP you images, take a picture of them with a digital camera, cell phone, ipad or tablet, and then place them on the Pixscan mat and it will cut out your STAMPED image.  This is a great advantage for us stampers.  And it is a great thing for us stampers to share with those that have ecutters. Find out if they have a Silhouette product, and let them know that they can use it with our stamps!

Diane

Ok there is going to be a lot of information presented below so grab a cup of tea or coffee before you begin!

I am a Mac only user so that eliminates a lot of options for me right off the bat

But here are my suggestions for you when looking at machines. I get no compensation for the products I'm listing below I'm just giving information based on my experience with them. I'm disregarding Provocraft because as a company I dislike many of their business practices and customer service so I try not to purchase their products. I'm going to only compare the machines im familiar with: Sizzix eClips, Silhouette Cameo/Portrait, Pazzles Vue

1. Is it compatible with Apple operating systems?

Silhouette Cameo/portrait, Sizzix eClips, Pazzles Vue

2. Does it need Internet to run?

Internet is used on Silhouette Machines if you want to purchase and import designs straight into Silhouette Studio software from the Silhouette online store

Internet is used on Pazzles Machines to purchase and import designs straight into inVue software from the Pazzles Craft Room

Internet is used on Sizzix eClips Machines to purchase and import designs from eShapes store

If you are only using your computer to cut images saved on your machine you can design print and cut without internet access.

3. Does it only work with cartridges?

Sizzix eClips takes both cartridges and digital files (this machine is retired)

Silhouette and Pazzles and Sizzix eClips2 are digital only

4. Does it require a power outlet?

yes

5. Can you print your image and cut it out?

You have print and cut options on Pazzles Vue built into software

Silhouette Cameo/Portrait now has PixScan mats which let you take a picture of your own designs and then Print & Cut them out

Sizzix eClips needs eCal (third party software) for Print & Cut

6. How large is the cutting area?

The eclips cuts thousands of shapes ranging in sizes from approximately .01" (.025cm) to 24" (61.0cm). The Cutting Mats allow you to cut paper sizes up to 12" x 12" (30.5cm x 30.5cm) or 12" x 24" (30.5cm x 61.0cm)

7. What materials can you cut?

Sizzix eClips can cut:

  • Paper
  • Vinyl
  • Construction Paper
  • Cardstock
  • Adhesive Cardstock
  • Vellum
  • Chipboard (cereal box thickness)
  • Foil
  • Shrink Film
  • Fabric with interfacing backing
  • materials 0.5 millimeters thick or less

Pazzles Vue can cut:

*some materials are purchased from the company store

Silhouette Cameo/Portrait can cut:

*some materials are purchased from the company store

I have been looking at electronic cutters for a while now but I still can't decide on one in particular. My husband has asked me what I want for Christmas and this would be perfect, only thing is I'm not sure what one I want. My question is what ones do you feel work best and are user friendly? Thanks!

RE: Re: Electronic Cutters & stamps!

Alicia Chaparro
Hi Diane,

Yes several people misunderstood my post about the PixScan feature so I corrected it the above post. Yes Silhouette Cameo and Portrait have always had Print & Cut features but the key is proper lighting and calibration. If the eye doesn't have enough light your cuts will not be precise. The PixScan Technology will be great for stampers but I actually plan on using it for capturing my children's drawings and handwriting projects for school. I could easily incorporate them into my project life pages. So many possibilities not enough time to play :D
