Re: SU!: Can you mail Watercolor cards in Occasion mini?

Kirsteen Gill

I hear regularly in my classes "oh i don't make cards this size because it costs extra to post", particularly when we do square cards and I always reply ANY size card can be posted (going on size not thickness, ie too many embellishments and layers) up to the size of a catalog envelope (6"x9")....if you put the card in a pretty envelope and then put it inside a catalog envelope, the catalog envelope can be mailed regular first class. So, if a card is 3 1/2"x5" can't you put it in a regular envelope and post it as you would regularly do?

My customers often look at me when I tell them and then say to me 'oh I NEVER thought of putting it into another regular envelope'

According to the USPS website 3-1/2 x 5 is the minimum regulation size for First Class letters... so YES they can be mailed via USPS!

The problem with square envelopes isn't their size per se, it's the ratio.  Envelopes have to fit within a Post Office rectangular guide (which is on their web site somewhere).  If it's not within this ratio, it requires extra postage.

Square always requires extra postage. USPS requires envelopes be rectangular with address on longest side even if they fit the standard measurements.  For all my fellow geometry students, USPS does not recognize a square as an equilateral rectangle.

Re: SU!: Can you mail Watercolor cards in Occasion mini?

From what I understand it has to do with the sorting mechanism.  They are sent through short side first... so a square just keeps getting turned and turned.  You can always put it in a rectangular envelope... gluing the excess envelope space to itself to prevent the card from sliding in transit.  That is what I do for cards that are too small to be mailed on their own.

Re: SU!: Can you mail Watercolor cards in Occasion mini?

Robin Messenheimer

When I did a class in October where the finished cards were square, I had them make envelopes that were slightly rectangular and reminded them that the longer side - even if by 1/8 inch - had to be the address side.

Once I tried to mail some CDs in an envelope that was 6 x 6-1/8. I mistakenly wrote the address on the 6-1/8 side. Now that was going to be expensive because I went over the 6" max height plus I had a rigid object.

Remember that, if you need the extra 20 cents for a square envelope AND because the card is thick, you only need one 20 cent stamp, not two (above what you need for the weight).

I buy 20 stamps by the sheets!

But don't post square......

Put them into a catalog envelope as I mentioned.....that solves all the problems and you can make a really cute square envelope for the card first......

RE: Can you mail Watercolor cards in Occasion mini?

Heather Sewczak
In reply to this post by Joan Norman

Instead of using two stamps, there are beautiful butterfly 66 cent stamps that you could use when you are an ounce over or when you mail your cards in the clear envelopes.  J  I mail all my cards in the clear – the extra 20 cents is worth it; a card peeking through the clear envelope is such a welcomed sight on top of all the bills!

Re: SU!: Can you mail Watercolor cards in Occasion mini?

Catherine Harwood
In reply to this post by Joan Norman

FYI -- the minimum size to mail a rectangular shaped card at normal Postal service prices is 5 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall -- so our notecards meet that size requirement and I mail them all the time. You do not need to put notecards in another larger envelope -- it's square cards or envelopes smaller than 5 by 3.5 that are a problem.
